Blending Nature, Art and Yoga Therapy – Imagine That

Blending Nature, Art and Yoga Therapy – Imagine That

Nature, Art, and Yoga Therapy (NAYT) is an integrated wellness strategy designed to relieve the body of physical stress, the mind of negative and fearful thoughts, and strengthen the nervous and immune systems. Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), studies the effects of how the brain, nervous system, and the immune system impact each other.

A dysfunctional immune system is unable to protect the body and PNI studies on split brain research have found functional differences between the right and left sides of the brain.    According to author Barbara Ganim, in her book Art & Healing, split-brain research revealed that we think and process our experiences, feeling, and emotions as images first and words second.  This research validates that the body responds to an image of a thought first, and then associates words to describe the thought.  This leads us to understand that imagery offers a powerful method to releasing stored emotions and feelings of pain.  And, alternatively can be used to keep the body/mind healthy.

Today’s expressive arts of nature, art, yoga and body movement, dance, dreams, guided imagery, music, chanting, and sound, all integrate imagery as a powerful healing tool.

In nature therapy, we first experience the world through our eyes.  Every aspect of nature creates a sensory awareness infusing our nervous system with sight, sound, smell, touch and perhaps, taste.  It’s easy for us to recall a time we might have been walking through a wooded forest.  We can see the path, the trees and the undergrowth all around us.  We can tune into the sounds of wildlife, our breath and the movement of nature.  We breathe in the essence of the pines, the intensity of the air, and nature itself.  We have the ability to touch the earth with each step, feel the texture of the bark or the local foliage.  And, depending on our willingness, we can even delight in nature with our taste buds.

In art therapy, we explore these same senses but, also embrace our own emotions, fears, and desires.  We draw our inner world out through painting, sculpture or other forms of mixed media.  The imagery becomes an expressive tool for us to communicate deep feelings and use our own stories to heal body/mind and spirit.

Yoga therapy focuses on the path of yoga as a healing journey that brings balance to the body and mind.  Much like split-brain research, yoga therapy focuses on the balance of the left and right, the sun and moon, the feminine and masculine (HATHA Yoga) to integrate and support the wellness of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous symptoms and awaken our essential nature. Ultimately, combing nature, art and yoga therapy can lead us on a enchanted journey of body, mind and spirit.

What if you took just one day, to explore nature, art and yoga therapy?  We believe that you will awaken to a mystical experience, touching and celebrating your own divine spirit, strengthening your immune and nervous system and finding yourself stronger and healthier. We invite you to join us this upcoming Saturday, in our Glistening the Soul program – a snowshoeing day retreat for women.

We will blend nature, art and yoga as we begin our day with a welcoming ceremony outdoors. We will guide you on how to connect with the beauty and peace in nature through your five senses and support you as you develop your intention for your time snowshoeing. You will have the opportunity to bond through sharing with your fellow adventurers. We will then move to a time of introspective work. You will practice leaving your world behind and hone your nature skills and receive that which you need from your time outdoors. You will be sending a powerful message to your soul that you are ready to receive whatever wisdom, peace, or nurturing you are seeking. We will then stop for sharing and processing your time outdoors as well as lunch. We will then journey indoors to NamasteWorks Yoga studio to complete our time. You will have the opportunity to creatively express your experience through journaling, art and mind/body practices. Your day guides include Courtney O’Malley and Nancy Levenson.

Our full day program is only $89.  If this sounds like the transformation you seek, call Nancy at NamasteWorks Outdoors to reserve one of the remaining spaces in this program.  303.725.1434.

High Attitude Sickness

High Attitude Sickness

When you discover the effects of High Attitude Sickness, living at 5280 or sea level is nothing short of bliss.  It’s a way of being, a way of living and a way affecting others.  I’ve adopted this term as my personal mantra and daily can feel it reverberate in my body, mind and soul.  High Attitude Sickness is a contagion and can affect anyone, but it starts within.  It’s a way of inhaling the wonderfulness of our life and drinking the elixir that fuels our spirit.  When we bask in this space, we can sense bliss lubricating the nerves of our body and mind.  We invite ourselves to bathe in the parasympathetic nervous system of rest and digest and step away from the chaos and stress that fuels so much of our daily lives.  We can feel the flood of joy running through our veins and cells, pumping our heart full of delight and permeating our entire being with energy.   Basking in High Attitude Sickness, lowers the heart rate, relaxes the blood vessels, feeds our soul and opens us up to the free flow of our feelings.

What if each of us were our own portable sanctuary?  It’s a simple process of feeling your way and following your own inner call to High Attitude Sickness.  Although we may have periods of profound joy, most of those moments are fleeting.  More of us are familiar with tension and stress than with the sensations of lightness, openness and bliss, which we can so easily tap into when we cherish all of our instincts and all of our moments.  Given enough time to adapt, most people can adjust to High Attitude Sickness and you may find that you want to journey even higher and spread that attitude to others.

Our newest programs offered under NamasteWorks Outdoors is a naturally way to develop High Attitude Sickness.  Our nature-based programs are designed to help you uncover a deeper unity with self and nature. Through our full day retreats, camping excursions, and self-discovery multi-day retreats, you will leave the civilized world behind to engage with nature and the mystery of the inner soul.  We believe that awakening to your sacred self is an affirmation to cultivate harmony in your life.

Each program is custom designed to enable you to meet yourself naturally.  Feel fully free to express yourself in every dimension of your life as you participate with nature walks, mind/body practices, journaling, reflection, mindfulness, creative expression, joyful movement, time in and out of community, and so much more.  Together, we will use nature’s call to enrich our self-awareness and connection. We can’t promise transformation, but sometimes it just magically happens.

Join Nancy Levenson and Courtney O’Malley, your guides,  for our upcoming snowshoe and day retreat – Glistening The Soul –  and venture into a love of High Attitude Sickness.

An Invitation to Try on Winter

An Invitation to Try on Winter

The colder temperatures in the winter months can be a deterrent for many to get outside. We complain, “it’s too cold, it’s too dark”.  We crave the comfort that inside offers us with cozy blankets, central heating, and comforting foods. Who doesn’t love to snuggle up with a blanket and a good book or a movie?  However, winter provides its own unique gifts.  The trails are not crowded and the sidewalks in our neighborhoods are calling for someone to walk on them. Many of the animals are hibernating, the birds have flown south, the leaves have fallen and in that we have the opportunity to notice the smaller details of nature.  The ice crystallizes on the bare branches and along pools of melted snow.  The few dried leaves that still ordain the trees sing their own unique song for us to hear. The cool of the air may make your nose run yes, but it also awakens our spirit to something greater.

I invite you to try out winter.  Say hello to nature in this magical time. If you need some inspiration try this experience. Make first tracks on a path the next time it snows.  At some point pause and look behind you at your steps.  These steps represent your past however long whether you want to focus on those steps as your past, your entire life, or how you are living in your current life.  How has your past served you?  How has it not served you?  Then stop and acknowledge that you can blaze a trail.  Next, look forward on the untouched landscape ahead of you representing your future.  What do you want that path to look like?  What could that look like if you could have anything you wanted?  Now notice where you are.  This is your present moment where neither your future nor your past can touch you.  In this moment it you just you.  If you are longing to embark on a nourishing adventure outdoors, then we invite you to join us on upcoming Glistening The Soul – Day Retreat & Snowshoeing for Women.
