Surrender to earth’s intelligence and rise up rooted, like a tree – a meditation practice

In my teachings these past two weeks, we have been playing with the beautiful words of German poet Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem, How Surely Gravity’s Law.  Taking aspects of his love poem to GOD, we have explored surrendering and heaviness leading to rising up rooted like trees and trusting our heaviness.  I share his poem here and offer you a brief opportunity to feel the depth of one of the stanzas of this beautiful connection to GOD/Spirit/Nature in the meditation practice that follows.

NamasteWorks Rilke

HOW SURELY GRAVITY’S LAW

How surely gravity’s law,
strong as an ocean current,
takes hold of even the smallest thing
and pulls it toward the heart of the world.

Each thing-
each stone, blossom, child –
is held in place.

Only we, in our arrogance,
push out beyond what we belong to
for some empty freedom.

If we surrendered
to earth’s intelligence
we could rise up rooted, like trees.

Instead we entangle ourselves
in knots of our own making
and struggle, lonely and confused.

So, like children, we begin again
to learn from the things,
because they are in God’s heart;
they have never left him.

This is what the things teach us:
to fall,
patiently to trust our heaviness.
Even a bird has to do that
before he can fly.

-Rainer Maria Rilke – Rilke’s Book of Hours:  Love Poems to GOD

We set out to explore the rich text of this work, and I invite you to explore it for yourself now.  Listen or just read below:

“If we surrendered
to earth’s intelligence
we could rise up rooted, like trees.”

Invite your physical body to just drop into the earth – do it no matter where you are right now in this present moment.
Feel your connection to earth
Notice how the earth hugs you and has always been here to support you
Sense the wisdom of allowing yourself to surrender
Give over your impulse to control anything now and release to gravity
Look around in your imagination and try to see what surrendering looks like
How does the earth help support the image of surrendering you’ve created in the mind?
Can you see yourself lying on the earth’s surface?
Where are you on planet earth this very moment?  See it fully in your mind’s eye.
Release yourself to her intelligence
What does that even mean for you?
How can the earth be intelligent?
What is intelligence after all?

Focus on your breathing and allow it to be natural.
And, as you lie here see small roots begin to release from your back and drop deep into the earth
With each breath now let these roots penetrate deeper and deeper into the earth’s surface
On each exhale feel the roots releasing from your back body slowly making their way through the crust of the earth
Surrender your roots to earth’s intelligence
Take your time to experience the penetrating depth of your roots
What comes to mind when you think of your own roots?
How does it feel?
Can you sense grounding and stability?

And in your mind’s eye look above you and imagine you can see a canopy of leaves protecting you.
Allow the mind to focus on the leaves, the shapes, the colors, the textures and surrender your mind too.

Imagine that your breath serves to feed the roots, your body the trunk of a tree, your mind, the branches and leaves, metaphors for the thoughts that exist from within.

And now fully surrender to earth’s intelligence and just rest here for a few moments.   When you are ready, come back and  see if you don’t rise up more rooted like a Tree.

We can learn so much from Rilke’s poem and the earth’s intelligence.

Therapeutic Yoga Meditation for Connective Tissue

All of the cells and tissues of the body are interconnected, held together by connective tissue. This tissue forms an amazing web inside the body. Most of us know about tendons, ligaments, muscles, and bones, but our connective tissue remains a mystery. It stretches from within each cell and ever single organ of the body. It’s everywhere from the base of our toes to the top of our head. It is our body’s internal fabric. In yoga, we work to open the connective tissue to allow it to gradually open from stiffness or tightness towards a pliable and flexible structure. We use our yoga postures to open the front lines, back lines, spiral lines and back to front lines of the body and each time we open these lines, we allow our connective tissue to soften, move, expand, and contract. The next time you are embodying yoga, try to feel these deeper tissues of your being, move your awareness deep inside to the level of connective tissue. I offer you the following 25 minute meditation to take you into their inner awareness of this vital and beautiful web inside each of us.

Maitri – Using Yoga Therapy to Open to the Self

by:  Nancy Levenson, 500 E-RYT, 1,000 PYT,  Professional Yoga Therapist

This week our clients leaned into themselves, developing a connection with Maitri, (Sanskrit: an unconditional friendship and love of oneself).  It’s easy to forget that self love and friendship is our starting point to exploring and expanding ourselves out into the world. It is through our own awareness of noticing and celebrating our positive self, qualities, skills, and way of being, that can embrace others with the same self love and unconditional friendship. Like carrying around two spheres, one inside ourselves and one outside ourselves, we learn how to find the center where the two spheres merge into one.

In our yoga therapy center, we work with clients to allow all of our desires, emotions and fears to unfold and open like the Lotus flower.  We delve deep inside the Manomaya Kosha, discovering lessons that we’ve learned and have yet to learn.  We develop a deep understanding of how our lessons become spiritual awakenings on our path to embracing our self and ultimately embracing a world with open arms and compassion. Can you sit with your own self in Maitri?  Take the time to explore this five minute meditation into self.

NamasteWorks Yoga Maitri Meditation

Can you sit in the company of self?
Drop into your inner silence
Peel away the layers of your being
And see that gem that lies deep within

Can you meditate with self?
Open to your own heart, your own emotions
Touch the very essence of your soul
And step away from all that was, to be fully present now

Can you dive deep inside?
Explore the unconditional love of the one you sit with now
Accept compassion and friendship
And all of your experiences as they arise

Open yourself up to the bliss of self
What pierces your heart with love, fear, joy, sadness?
What is calling you from deep inside?
And how can you best serve you

Enter the crucible of Maitri
The unconditional friendship with oneself
Sit in silence, just allow, and just listen
You may discover a beautiful being has been with you all along

Connective Tissue Meditation

Allow this to be a time of complete relaxation… invite in a conscious effort to release and let go as completely as possible. Move around if you need to, to make the body just a little more comfortable. Soften through the eyes, the jaws, the shoulders….invite in an awareness of really letting go. Release wholly from the body. Read more

Sunergized – A Guided Sun Meditation©

By this time of year, many of us are missing the warmth and energy of the sun. This guided meditation is an invitation to bring the sun inside of you.

The Sun

Allow an image of the sun to rise into your awareness. Give this sun whatever color feels pleasing to you. Sense its presence suspended just above your mat, just above you….warming the space all around you.

Invite the nurturing, glowing rays of the sun inside you now. Allow them to brighten your every thought. Soothe your inner breath. Soften and warm every muscle, joint and bone…allowing every part of you to be bathed in a soothing radiance.

As you breathe in, breathe in the essence of the sun……And as you breathe out, bathe internally in this loving energy.

Feel as if you are carrying the sun deep inside your heart now. With every out-breath, warmth spreads throughout your body…pulsating, through every organ, tissue and limb. Spend some time just experiencing this sensation…allowing the heat to radiate from inside you.

As you breathe in, breathe in the essence of the sun……And as you breathe out, bathe internally in this loving energy.

Connect with your own inner sun now, this pure light within you. Imagine sending light tendrils out from your heart, to someone near you, in this space, at this time. Send this person loving-kindness and loving energy, so that they too, bathe in the glow of the sun.

As you breathe in, breathe in the essence of the sun……And as you breathe out, bathe internally in this loving energy.

Now bask in the silence of your own internal sun. (Pause)

Slowly let go of the image of the sun now. But, know that it is there to light your way any time you chose.

Draw on the sun’s power to awaken you. Feel the vital life force emanating throughout you. Slowly begin to wiggle your fingers and toes. Do whatever you need to become twice as awake and, when you are ready, bring yourself back to the present moment.

Close the meditation with the following Sankalpa:  I invite the image of the sun to lift my spirit, soothe my heart and liberate my mind– Namaste
