Coolness in Every Breath – Kaki Pranayama

July 22, 2011

If you are finding the summer heat unbearable, you can always turn to a yogic pranayama to cool you from the inside out. Kaki Pranayama employs the use of forming a small beak with your lips, allowing the inhale to cool as it travels over the tongue, then seal the mouth and exhale out the nose.  Follow the practice below:

Coolness in Every Breath

Pranayama:  Kaki on the inhale

  • Sit/Lie and be with yourself
  • Eyes closed, body grounding
  • Soften the structure of what you call you
  • Let out all rigidity
  • And ask yourself am I breathing?
  • Invite in Kaki Pranayama on the inhale
  • Take a slow breath in through pursed lips
  • At the same time notice how the navel radiates outward toward the sky
  • Seal the mouth and exhale the breath
  • At the same time invite the navel to draw inwards to the spine
  • And stay with this breath
  • Imagine yourself as a small inflatable boat
  • Allow each inhale to draw the cool air slowly inside you
  • Each exhale, seal the mouth and feel your boat slowly moving
  • And as you breath, notice if your body needs something from you
  • As you inhale, feel the texture of the breath
  • As you exhale, hear the sound of the breath
  • Kaki beathing, drawing breath in and down
  • Sealed lips, nose releasing the breath
  • Noticing how Kaki helps you to lengthen your inhalation and begins to cool you
  • How the exhale continues to move your small boat
  • And noticing now, where is my mind?
  • What emotions/sensations am I feeling right now
  • And now imagine rowing a boat to a peaceful location, by slowly rolling the arms forward and back in rhythm to your breath
  • And invite the arms to mimic oars
  • With each pull of the oars feel yourself becoming more graceful
  • Your breathing slowing
  • And your strokes , longer and more open, allowing this cooling breath in for a minimum of five minutes

Kaki Pranayama is just one of the therapeutic yoga breathing strategies offered to our clients to improve overall respiratory health.   To learn more about pranayama or breath with movement, just contact us. NamasteWorks Yoga + Wellness is a center focused on helping you Discover Yoga as a Healing Art.

Kirtan Retreat at Peaceful Hills, Colorado

July 14, 2011

One of the most ancient spiritual practices used to quiet the mind, anchor us in the present and strengthen our energy field is Kirtan.  This sacred form of call and response meditation or chanting repeats a mantra over and over again.  If you have ever attended a Kirtan you know the powerful energy that is created by sound vibration, collective chanting and the shared presence of others.

Next weekend you have an opportunity to attend a Kirtan in the foothills of Colorado.  I hope you will consider stopping in and joining us at this Kirtan Retreat, hosted by Tom Fuhrmann.  Come for a single session or a whole weekend.  We’d love to share our energy with yours.

Meaning of Namaste

July 12, 2011

Namaste…..why do we say that at the end of a yoga class and what does it mean?

If you’ve come out to Yoga in the Park or attended any yoga class, you’ve most likely experienced our closing as a simple gesture, Namaste. The hands are drawn together at heart center in a mudra called Anjali (Ahn-jah-lee), prayer hands. The instructor …says, Namaste as a deep form of respect and participants repeat the gesture back to the instructor. It’s a beautiful way for us to connect energetically between our spirits.

Namaste, has several interpretations, you’ll find one on the photo attached. But, I like to simply say; “The spirit in me honors and blesses the spirit in you, and when you are in that place and I am in that place, we are one.”

NamasteWorks Yoga, the business name was conceived to support that statement. When we come from this place of meeting each other, it simply works.

Making Peace with Migraine Headaches – Workshop being offered October 1st at NamasteWorks Yoga + Wellness

July 11, 2011

Highlands Ranch, Colorado, July 11, 2011– NamasteWorks Yoga + Wellness is offering another in their series of workshops, this one targeted specifically to migraine suffers.  Making Peace with Migraine Headaches offers individuals a natural way to help relieve and minimize migraines with coping skills, educational and breath awareness, meditation, mudras and yoga practices to take them on a path from feeling frustrated and trapped to finding freedom and making peace with their migraines.

“While yoga poses offer many therapeutic benefits, doing the wrong practice can trigger an episode or aggravate an existing one, rather than provide relief.  This program has been carefully constructed to assist in that relief from a therapeutic perspective” said Nancy Levenson, founder of NamasteWorks Yoga + Wellness, LLC, and a certified yoga instructor and therapist.

Each program will be facilitated by Renee Carrillo, a 200hr Therapeutic Wellness Instructor, who herself has battled through years of migraines and finding relief in yoga.  Renee will guide this program on Saturday, October 1 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm and introduce individuals to a broader six-week program, Therapeutic Yoga for Migraine Sufferers.

All workshops are held at NamasteWorks Yoga + Wellness, located at 5860 S. Curtice Street, Littleton, CO 80120.  To sign up for this workshop an RSVP is required – send a request via the contact form on the site or call 303.725.1434.
